Frequently Asked Questions

QR scanning is typically used when starting Smart-ID authentication on a computer, where the QR code is displayed on the screen and scanned using the Smart-ID app on your phone.
It is possible to scan a QR code from another phone, but be careful this is always done on devices that you control!

In addition, many services that use Smart-ID now support newer authentication methods that do not rely on QR codes at all.
These services can automatically detect the Smart-ID app on your mobile device when you start authentication, and the request is sent directly to the app on your phone.

In such cases, device and account detection happens securely in the background using enhanced security checks, and the PIN entry screen opens automatically in the Smart-ID app.
No QR code scanning is required.

From a user perspective, this is usually presented as a “Log in with Smart-ID” button.
You can try this flow here: https://portal.smart-id.com/login

As always, only approve Smart-ID requests that you have personally initiated and recognize!
