Estonia's Government’s e-services are implementing Smart-ID+ as the new standard authentication method. This makes communication with the state more secure, faster and more convenient.
Smart-ID+ enhances security by adding an extra protection layer to digital authentication and signing. Once activated in an e-service, it eliminates the risk that knowing a PIN code alone is sufficient to complete a transaction. Users must actively initiate and confirm each action directly in their Smart-ID application. This is a critical defense against attackers attempting to manipulate people via phone calls or text messages.
The new Smart-ID+ introduces two straightforward login methods: scanning an e-service’s dynamically changing QR code with Smart-ID app on phone or using app-to-app communication. With Smart-ID+, you can now access e-services without manually entering your personal ID code. On a computer, a dynamic QR code appears on screen. On mobile, the Smart-ID app opens automatically, and you confirm the action with your PIN1.
Smart-ID+ is rolled out gradually and operates only in these government e-services where it has been specifically implemented. To ensure a smooth transition, the previous Smart-ID login method with confirmation codes remains temporarily available.
Smart-ID+ requires an updated Smart-ID app on your phone. If automatic updates are enabled on your device, no additional action is needed. If you have not enabled automatic updates, please visit your app store and download the latest app version.
In e-services that do not yet support Smart-ID+, you can continue using Smart-ID the traditional way by entering your personal ID code and comparing confirmation codes. Your digital identity remains protected when you keep your login information private and never enter PIN codes at someone else’s instruction.
